Minus 20 degrees on the thermometer, minus 33 degrees felt – it was bitterly cold when the Chiefs won against the Dolphins in January. Some people suffered frostbite and lost limbs.
Because of the extreme cold during the playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins, fans had their toes and fingers amputated after suffering frostbite. This was announced by a Missouri hospital without providing specific information about the number of people affected.
According to the release, dozens of people were treated for frostbite during the cold spell in the Kansas City area surrounding the Jan. 13 game. Amputations were necessary for twelve people – including visitors to the NFL game. More could follow in the coming weeks.
Cold record still not broken
During the game it was as cold as minus 20 degrees Celsius, and due to the wind the temperature in Arrowhead Stadium felt like it was minus 33 degrees Celsius. However, the cold record is still held by a game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys from 1967, when the perceived temperature was said to have been minus 44 degrees Celsius.
The Chiefs around quarterback star Patrick Mahomes won the game against the Miami Dolphins and won the Super Bowl again in February. Pop superstar Taylor Swift was also at the stadium in January. Chiefs professional Travis Kelce’s girlfriend watched the game from a heated box.
