He was a Pope – and glowing football fan. Now the Argentinian club San Lorenzo has said goodbye to his loyal supporter Francis.

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88. Just a few hours after he had given his “Urbi et orbi” blessing. In his twelve years as head of the Catholic Church, he ensured moving moments (three important ones can be read here) – and loved football.

When he was still a child, he visited the 15-time Argentine master San Lorenzo. The club now posted a statement on platform X and condolned to death: “He was never another and he was always one of us.” According to the club, this has not changed over the years. As a “boy and as a man”, he was as well as as a “priest and cardinal” and later as a Pope.

San Lorenzo also said: “He has his passion for El Ciclón (nickname of the club, Note d. Red.) passed on: when he was to the old gasometer (stadium of the association, Note d. Red.) went around the 46 team (won the championship in 1946, Note d. Red.) to see (…) when he always received the visits to the blue-red in the Vatican with full joy. “He had the membership number 8823.

The club ended the statement as follows: “By Jorge Mario Bergoglio (bourgeois name of the Pope, Note d. Red.) Until Francis there was one thing that has never changed: his love for El Ciclón. In deep grief we say today from San Lorenzo to Francis: goodbye, thank you and forever! We will be together forever! “
