Game interrupted by protest action
The game had just started when it was interrupted again. Two men ran onto the pitch and tied each other with cable ties to a post of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp’s goal in a protest against fossil fuels.
It took about three minutes for Eintracht employees to free the two men from the posts. Then football could be played again. And Eintracht got the better restart. Rafael Borré (11th), Jens Hauge (17th) and Ansgar Knauff (18th) did not pose any problems for Freiburg keeper Mark Flekken with their shots.
Grifo completes a spotless counterattack
Freiburg was primarily concerned with a safe defense and only sporadically played offensively. But a spotless counterattack in the 27th minute gave Freiburg the surprising lead. Frankfurt’s Evan Ndicka lost the ball ten meters from the Freiburg penalty area. The ball landed on Lucas Höler and Ermedin Demirovic at Robert Sallai, who prevailed in the penalty area against three Frankfurters who were too passive and served the completely free Grifo. The Italian stayed calm and put the ball low in the right corner.
With the lead behind them, Freiburg continued to focus on the defensive. Accordingly, Frankfurt had a lot of ball possession, but few ideas. Only in the 40th minute did things get dangerous again in the Freiburg penalty area when Philipp Lienhart blocked a Martin Hinteregger shot five meters from goal with his chest.
Lindstrom’s goal does not count
At the beginning of the second half, Eintracht was much more efficient. Jesper Lindstrøm ran lonely to Flekken from the right and scored – but the goal didn’t count because Lindstrøm was ruled offside.
Two minutes later the ball was back in the Freiburg goal and this time the goal counted. Hauge sent Kostic on the journey with an outside instep pass. The SCF had moved up so that the Serb ran alone towards Flekken and safely hit the right corner with his left (54′).
Joker Petersen stabs
Freiburg coach Christian Streich reacted with a three-man substitution and brought Nils Petersen into play, among others. And just eight minutes after being substituted on, the Freiburg joker scored. Petersen headed Christian Günter’s free kick over the line. Freiburg’s lead was just as surprising as it was in the first half, because it was actually Frankfurt on the push.
In the 84th minute, Eintracht were only inches away from equalizing. Ajdin Hrustic, who had just come on as a substitute, took aim from 16 meters but only hit the inside of the post. Two minutes later, Frankfurt even celebrated the supposed equalizer. But goalscorer Daichi Kamada was a few centimeters offside. In the end, the people of Freiburg celebrated.
Freiburg welcomes Bochum
SC Freiburg continue on Easter Saturday with a home game against VfL Bochum (3:30 p.m.). Eintracht will travel to FC Barcelona next Thursday in the Europa League for the much-anticipated second leg (9 p.m.). In the Bundesliga there is an away game at Union Berlin on Sunday.
