A successful combination makes the difference: Waldhof Mannheim beats SV Wehen Wiesbaden and again follows a defeat with a win.

After defeats, SV Waldhof Mannheim has always managed to follow up with a win this season. That was also the case this time. After losing 1-0 to FC Ingolstadt last week, Mannheim defeated SV Wehen Wiesbaden 1-0 (0-0) on Matchday 9 at the Carl Benz Stadium (September 17) with a goal from Kother.

Self-confident people from Wiesbaden

The Wiesbadeners started confidently, which was not surprising, after all they had not lost six games in a row. First and foremost, striker Benedict Hollerbach occasionally got the Mannheim defensive team into minor difficulties with his dribbles.

Double chance for Wehen Wiesbaden – punishable handball by Seegert?

Things got hectic in Mannheim’s penalty area after just over 20 minutes. After the Waldhöfer couldn’t clear the ball, Wiesbaden’s Heusser shot Seegert’s hand. Wiesbaden demanded a penalty but didn’t get it. Instead, it continued with a corner ball, which also became dangerous. Mannheim’s Behrens cleared a header from Gürleyen on the line.

Kother had the greatest opportunity for Mannheim in the first 45 minutes. After a mistake by the Wiesbaden back line in the penalty area, he shot wide to the left.

Contested duel between Mannheim and Wiesbaden

Even after the half-time break, the Wiesbadeners were initially the more dangerous team. Froese’s shot just missed the target four minutes after the restart. Things got explosive in the 55th minute when Lebeau from Mannheim won the ball from Wiesbaden defender Mockenhaupt and ran alone towards goal. Referee Jöllenbeck called Lebeau back because he wanted him to foul Mockenhaupt. The Mannheimers then complained loudly – and from then on they were better in the game.

Kother puts Mannheim in the lead

In the 64th minute, the Waldhöfer even took the lead. Sohm and Wagner combined from left back to right front, where Kother got the ball and shot it precisely into the bottom left corner. It was the best combination of the game up to that point. From then on, the Mannheimers defended their lead with a lot of effort and never gave it up again. With the win, they passed Wiesbaden (seventh place, 15 points) and are sixth with 16 points.

After the international break, SV Waldhof Mannheim will take on VfL Osnabrück (October 1st). SV Wehen Wiesbaden welcomes Rot-Weiss Essen a day later.
