Food banks can look forward to tons of province

The Drenthe food banks receive 100,000 euros from the province of Drenthe. The coalition parties in the Provincial Council want to support the food banks now that more and more people are using them and the food banks themselves are finding it increasingly difficult to cover the costs.

“The number of people knocking on the door of the food banks in Drenthe has been increasing considerably for some time,” notes the PvdA, which will submit a widely supported proposal on Wednesday to support the food banks. According to the PvdA, the announced measures for low incomes of Prinsjesdag come too late or are not sufficient. “Due to the rising inflation and especially the high energy costs, many people are in acute problems. Even regular and healthy meals are often not possible.”

According to the PvdA, the support is also necessary because food banks are struggling to fill food packages. “Fewer donations are coming in. In addition, the food banks themselves are also affected by the increased costs of housing and energy.” In addition, there are simply fewer products available because supermarkets prevent waste.

The PvdA’s support proposal can count in advance on the support of the other coalition parties VVD, CDA, GroenLinks and the ChristenUnie. The PvdA hopes that the proposal will receive unanimous support on Wednesday. “So that an important gesture is made on behalf of the entire Provincial Council to the residents of Drenthe who are dependent on the support of the food banks.”
