The Minister for Sport spoke in Rome during the 38th national congress of the Italian Sports Medicine Federation. President Casasco: “Movement is medicine”

March 30 – 8.35pm – MILAN

It was the Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi who brought a political contribution to the 38th National Congress of the Italian Sports Medical Federation. “The biological and chronological age is a fascinating topic for dealing with our well-being,” said Abodi, referring to the title chosen by the Federation for this edition. “The presence of the sporting theme is not decisive, but it contributes in an absolutely significant way to life studies, to which we must contribute in the meantime with information, with knowledge and awareness of how precious is the gift that has been entrusted to us, that of life, which the longer it gets, the more it needs to be accompanied by youth, in an educational key, by ways of living which then over time allow our organism to preserve itself. Sport is an indispensable ingredient and what we are trying to do with the FMSI is to work in information and the dissemination of best practices, making scientific research available in increasingly advanced frontiers to try to overcome the limits for which the organism is the bearer”.

Abodi’s presence enriched a very busy program that the president of the FMSI Maurizio Casasco put together for the over 3,200 doctors who arrived in the capital. “A great success for the Italian Sports Medical Federation and a presence, that of Minister Abodi, which adds to those on the inaugural day of the ministers Schillaci and Bernini. An important message that of biological age and chronological age, in a world where age is increasing by three hours a day and which therefore needs to transfer the scientific knowledge acquired at the highest competitive and Olympic level to the entire population and to the national health system. A prevention that can take place through prescribed physical exercise, like a drug, by a sports medicine specialist”. Vice President Marco Scorcu instead illustrated the issues covered in the symposium “Vaccinations, indispensable prevention for a good biological age”, very dear to the themes of the FMSI: “In that adolescent phase of transition between the pediatrician and the choice of a general practitioner, a period of precariousness is created, in which the role of the sports doctor becomes very important in the procedures or in the vaccination calendar. At that moment these kids do not have a point of reference and it may be the sports doctor they practice who intercepts them. We can pay attention to their vaccination status and suggest small tips, illustrating and presenting the most appropriate situations related to their status as athletes. But it also becomes important in the adult population with pathologies to provide correct information that can be useful”.

the sessions

In the session dedicated to “Human aging and motor activities”, Francesco Landi (Director of the Department of Aging, Orthopedic and Rheumatological Sciences, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome) explained: “Longevity is a game that is played throughout life and the example is that of the muscle, which begins to decline around the age of 40-50: to gain longevity in good health we must act preventively through physical exercise and correct nutrition”. From Massimo Sacchetti (Rector of the University of Rome Foro Italico) came a reminder about “metabolic flexibility, which is stimulated by varying physical exercise as much as possible, alternating and choosing what we like best”. In the second session “Update on neuroscience, physical exercise and sport”, where we moved from physical activity to be prescribed for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s to that necessary for depression. The afternoon opened with the third highly original session dedicated to “Women and movement”, addressing current issues and in-depth analysis, introduced by a very detailed introduction by Luigi Di Luigi (Scientific Committee of the Italian and International Federation) on “Gender and sport”. Among the many speakers who animated the 4 sessions on Friday, there was also Stefano Righetti (Interventional Cardiology IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Foundation of Monza, Collaborating Doctor of the FIDAL National Athletics Team, Collaborating Doctor of the FISI National Cross-Country Skiing Team), who addressed the topic “Carbohydrates and modulation of inflammation in sport”. Explaining that “the role is essentially to positively modulate inflammation. The intake of carbohydrates correctly immediately before, during and immediately after activity is not able to completely block inflammation, but activates the mechanisms that resolve it with positive effects on the recovery and repair of muscle damage”.
