Fletcher Hotels will run Coevorden Castle

Fletcher Hotels will take over the operation of Coevorden Castle. The previous operator, H Design, was declared bankrupt last month. Curator Paul van Boven announced that he is committed to a restart and was able to report today that the hotel chain is taking over the business.

According to the curator, the after-effects of the corona crisis and high energy costs destroyed the previous catering company. According to curator Van Boven, the company’s debt has increased to an amount of approximately six thousand euros. But further investigation into the finances is first necessary, the curator adds.

The buildings are owned by Groningen internet entrepreneur Ben Woldring. In addition to the castle, the nearby Governor’s House and De Vlijt hotel with 24 rooms are also part of the bankruptcy. Van Boven approached Fletcher himself in collaboration with Woldring. “This is a large party with a lot of experience. It’s also great for Coevorden that it was successful.” Because it is a historic and iconic location in the city of Drenthe, says Van Boven.

Fletcher also initially plans to take over 15 employees. According to Van Boven, the investigation into the debt burden is still ongoing. “Not all creditors have come forward yet.”

Coevorden Castle will be the sixth hotel that Fletcher opens in Drenthe. Last week, Fletcher was approached by the curator and property owner, who were looking for a new operator. “After the phone call, we immediately looked up some photos of the castle and we were sold,” says Ben de Ruijter, operational director of Fletcher Hotels.

So it was not a long-term decision. “This castle fits perfectly with Fletcher’s target group. They love discovering a city, going out and a bit of history. Then you have come to the right place in Coevorden,” says De Ruijter.

The hotel and restaurant guests of Kasteel Coevorden will not notice much of the takeover by Fletcher Hotels. “This castle is already unique, we do not intend to turn it into a design hotel,” says De Ruijter. For the guests, only the new flags and Fletcher cars will stand out.

Investments have been made in new duvets, mattresses and pillows. The menu will also receive a small adjustment. De Ruijter: “We want to work with fresh products, the well-known Fletcher dishes, but also extensive dining. It is aimed at a broad target group, everyone should feel at home.”

On Friday afternoon the place will officially be called ‘Fletcher Hotel Restaurant Kasteel Coevorden’. That is the moment when the takeover is celebrated.
