The shark teeth that the minister is looking for often end up on De Haan beach due to the sand that was deposited in the past for reclamation of the beach. This sand comes from an area rich in fossils, including the teeth of sharks that lay in the seabed. Although at first glance it may seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, the sand reclamations have made it easier to find these prehistoric treasures.
“But lately there seem to be fewer and fewer shark teeth,” De Ridder admits. “The sand used in the reclamation is rich in fossils, but we must certainly pay attention to whether we can take fossil-rich sand into account in future contracts in September.”
