Due to the 2-1 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen, the team of coach Christian Streich finished in sixth place in the German football competition, which resulted in a ticket for the Europa League. RB Leipzig took fourth place with 2 points more and with that a place in the group stage of the Champions League.

Freiburg had to win against Leverkusen, the number 3 in the Bundesliga, to overtake Leipzig and Leipzig had to lose to Arminia Bielefeld. Leipzig trailed 1-0 for a long time and Freiburg equalized in the final phase, giving Freiburg just one goal to take over fourth place. Goals in injury time in both games prevented that from happening. Willi Orbán made the 1-1 for Leipzig. Bielefeld finished seventeenth and, like SpVgg Greuther Fürth, relegated from the Bundesliga.
