The project is still in the starting blocks
As “Variety” transmits, the French filmmaker and screenwriter Maïmouna Doucouré (known for “Mignonnes”) works together with the production company Studiocanal on the project. The idea for the biopic was probably also supported by Baker’s sons Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker as well as their numerous adoptive children. The concrete status of the film project is unknown to the public. FKA Twigs himself has not yet commented on the rumor mill. It is also unclear who could also be seen in the biopic about Baker in addition to the 37-year-old.
Josephine Baker: More than just one entertainer
Josephine Baker was a dancer, actress and singer. In Paris, she rose to one of the first female black superstars and still shaped large parts of pop culture. In 2006, 100 years after Baker’s birth, Beyoncé wore a banana rock for the performance of “Deja Vu”, which was supposed to remind you of a famous costume of the entertainer. With this outfit, Baker deliberately exaggerated racist stereotypes and colonial -shaped clichés of their audience of the twenties.
Characterized by early racism experiences as a black woman in her country of birth USA, she campaigned for citizens’ rights for years. Already in World War II, she fought against the Nazis as a trained pilot and member of the Résistance and the French secret service. Back in the United States, in 1963 she was the only woman to talk to Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech alongside Martin Luther King’s.
After her death (deceased at the age of 68, on April 12, 1975), Baker was the first black woman to be accepted into the Pantheon in Paris in November 2021. Which part of her life in the biopic could be particularly focused on is still unknown.
