Five dead in Corsica due to severe storm: ‘It only stormed for half an hour’ | Abroad

Several victims were hit by falling trees on campsites, including a 13-year-old girl, French media reported. An elderly woman died when a torn off hut roof landed on her car.

The Dutch Pieter, who is on holiday in Corsica with his family, talks about the sudden storm. “We woke up this morning and nothing happened. We weren’t warned either. It only stormed for half an hour, but it was very intense.”

A wind gust of 224 kilometers per hour has been measured on the island. In San-Nicolao, the place where the Naardense Pieter spends his holiday with his family, trees fell on cars and caravans. The atmosphere at the campsite was depressed after the storm, says Pieter. “Fortunately, no one was injured. That is the most important.”
