The state of Groningen and Northern Drenthe was presented for the first time on 15 April. With this, the cabinet comes up with a promise that was made after the parliamentary survey about gas extraction. Over the next 30 years, an independent party will report every year about the progress of the recovery and the results of the investments in the region.
The State of Groningen and Northern Drenthe is intended for anyone who wants to know how the region is doing two years after the cabinet responded to the conclusions of the parliamentary committee of inquiry with “Nij Begun”. The researchers of CMO Stamm, KplusV and Aletta have advice from the state one accessible magazine Made, in which they describe how the region is doing. The researchers presented the State of Groningen and Noord-Drenthe during a meeting in Delfzijl.

Content of the research
In 2025 the emphasis is on the damage settlement and the reinforcement operation. The state of Groningen contains:
- a report on the results of the damage repair;
- a report on the progress of the reinforcement;
- An overview of publications and investigations published in 2024 on developments in Groningen and Noord-Drenthe;
- A description of the state of affairs of the following pillars from the cabinet approach “Nij Begun”:
- sustainability by isolation;
- Well -being and social recovery;
- economic development;
- A representation of the conversations that the researchers had with organizations and residents, as an illustration of quantitative trends.
Because the policy on sustainability, welfare and economic development was still being worked out in 2024, the effects of this on broad prosperity and the sustainability assignment in the region cannot yet be seen. We will add this to the state in the coming years to be able to monitor the intended goals. The social and economic agendas have now been presented. Residents can apply for a subsidy for insulation measures from the summer. From 2026, the State will therefore also report extensively on these topics.
Follow-up
The cabinet is working on a proposal for the Groningen Act, which makes the state of Groningen and Northern Drenthe published a legal obligation. In the coming eight weeks, discussions with residents, social organizations and administrators, among others. This is followed by the government’s response to the state.
