A fire broke out in a shop on Friesestraat in the center of Coevorden this morning.

A passerby saw smoke coming from the upper part of the shop around six o’clock and called the emergency services.

It quickly scaled up to a major fire. The fire brigade is doing this as a precaution due to the location of the building in the city center among other old buildings.

A clothing store is located in the building. Several fire stations were fighting the fire. A spokesperson for the fire brigade said that the fire started in the central heating boiler in the store. No one was in the building at the time, so no one was injured.

Surrounding buildings were not damaged. Residents of adjacent homes still had to leave their homes temporarily, but can now return.

The fire was under control around half past seven. The fire brigade is working to ventilate the building.
