Fire brigade pelted with fireworks in Volendam when extinguishing fire in container

In Volendam, firefighters were pelted with fireworks last night while they were extinguishing a fire in an underground container. The Zaanstreek Waterland Security Region looks back on a quiet night without major incidents.

The firefighters were putting out a fire when fireworks were thrown at them. The security region says that street coaches were present, but they could not prevent the throwing.

The fire brigade and ambulance have been busier in Zaanstreek Waterland than in previous years, when corona measures were still in place. For the police it was just as busy as an average catering night, only in the Zaanse district of Poelenburg it was equally restless. The security region reports that peace returned after additional police officers were deployed.

In Zaandam and Purmerend, two primary schools were damaged after vandalism with fireworks. The strong wind, for which code yellow was issued, also caused damage. In Purmerend, a brazier blew over, causing flares to shoot into a house, instead of into the air. “Fortunately, no fire broke out, but the fireworks did lead to damage to the house.”
