The eighth edition of the “Amateur Finals Day” took place on Saturday, during which finals of the state cup competitions took place throughout Germany. Numerous winners not only celebrated the title, but also a place in the first round of the DFB Cup, which will take place from August 11th to 14th.

After FC St. Pauli (Regionalliga Nord), only one third and one fourth division team from the lower classes made it into the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. The Hamburg failed at Bayern.

Arminia Bielefeld (3rd division) escaped the Bayern draw nine years after St. Pauli’s march through in the semifinals, but still lost 4-0 to VfL Wolfsburg.

Saarbrücken (Regionalliga Südwest) was the only team that made it into the cup semifinals as a fourth division team. That was the end of the game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Trier experienced its cup highlight as a third division team in the semi-finals of 1998, where it ended in a spectacular penalty shoot-out against MSV Duisburg.

In 1996, Energie Cottbus, who had to bow out in the final against VfB Stuttgart, also managed the feat of advancing to the final as a third division team.

In 1993 Hertha was in the final, albeit the third division reserve team. In the final it was 1-0 for Bayer Leverkusen.

The TV channel “Das Erste” accompanied the “final day of the amateurs” from 12:05 p.m. in a live conference lasting around seven hours. In 2016, for the first time, almost all the cup finals of the 21 national associations were played in one day. This is used to determine the respective participants of the state associations for the DFB Cup, the three largest associations Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Westphalia are even allowed to field two teams. On June 18, these clubs are hoping for an attractive draw in the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup.

Oberliga club TuS Makkabi Berlin made history by being the first Jewish club to qualify for the main round of the DFB Cup.

Final day of the amateurs: Some DFB tickets have already been awarded

The special features this year: Since VfL Osnabrück, 1. FC Saarbrücken and SV Elversberg have already secured participation in the DFB Cup by finishing in the 3rd division, two tickets from the state associations have already been allocated. In Lower Saxony, the beneficiary is Atlas Delmenhorst. In Saarland, on May 30, there was a decider between the defeated semi-finalists, in which FC 08 Homburg won 4-1 against SV Auersmacher.

The tickets for the other three participants from Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Westphalia have also already been booked. In Bavaria, the champions of the regional league, SpVgg Unterhaching, have qualified for the DFB Cup. In Westphalia, the best Westphalian team in the West Regional League, i.e. champions Preußen Münster, can also take part in the first round. In Lower Saxony, the place goes to the winner of the state cup for amateurs (5th league and down). On May 29, TuS Bersenbrück clearly won the final 3-0 against SC Spelle-Venhaus.
