Dutch roads were historically busy in 2024: traffic jams have never been so high. This is evident from new figures from Rijkswaterstaat. The main cause is that many people often get into the car at the same time. That is why Minister Barry Madlener (Infrastructure and Water Management) is launching the new ‘Rush Hour Free’ campaign today, which calls on people to avoid rush hour more often, if that is possible for them.
In 2024, traffic jams on national highways increased by no less than 12% compared to 2023. Traffic jams are the length of the traffic jam multiplied by how long the traffic jam lasts. Last year, 77% of traffic jams occurred during rush hour. Accidents accounted for 10% of traffic jams, and 6% were due to planned work. This will be no different in 2025. Even if the amount of traffic during rush hour remains the same, traffic jams will continue to increase due to major, necessary road works that are planned.
Rush-hour free driving to reduce traffic jams
Tuesday and Thursday are the days with the most traffic jams. Driving without rush hour is a good way to reduce traffic jams. Not everyone can drive outside rush hour, but people who can do so can contribute to reducing rush hour problems.
Peak-free driving means traveling outside the peak hours of 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM and 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM. For example, by starting at home on Tuesday or Thursday and going to work later.
Minister Madlener: “The traffic jams in our country are more than an annoyance: they cost us time and money, and they also contribute to unsafe situations. By choosing more consciously when we travel, we can significantly reduce traffic jams. It requires a change in mentality, but the benefits are great. Together we can make a difference. That is why we are starting the ‘Rush Hour Free’ campaign today.”
About the campaign
With the ‘Rush Hour Free’ campaign, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management wants to make people aware of the benefits of rush hour free driving and encourage them to discuss what is possible at work. Because those who avoid rush hour save time, are more satisfied and more productive. The campaign can be seen on television, in newspapers, magazines, on out-of-home signs and via social media in the coming month.
On vanAnaarBeter.nl People will be able to find all information about road works on national highways and expected nuisance again next year. Current information about traffic disruption and traffic jams can be found at Rijkswaterstaat traffic information.
