Rot-Weiss Essen took the points from hosts FC Ingolstadt on matchday 14. Sabrina Wittmann’s team put up a fight, but couldn’t take advantage of their own chances and ended up with a 2-1 defeat.

After the defeat against Cologne, Sabrina Wittmann’s team now has to come to terms with a 1:2 loss against Rot-Weiss Essen. The Schanzer created good chances, but unlike the guests, they were unable to convert them into anything worth counting. A penalty kick resulted in the goal, but in the end the fifth defeat of the season could no longer be averted. From Wittmann’s point of view, a point would definitely have been possible. However, she “doesn’t want to declare the relegation battle yet” after losing the duel, she explained on the Sky microphone.

Only chances, no goals

FC Ingolstadt started aggressively and threatened to score shortly after kick-off. Essen’s goalkeeper had to make the first saves when the Schanzer had a triple chance (4′): First, Dennis Kaygın dribbled into the center from the left side and tested Jakob Golz from a distance. The keeper was also able to defuse the follow-up shot from close range before Linus Rosenlocher missed the third attempt. FCI coach Sabrina Wittmann could only shake her head. In return, Ingolstadt’s Kai Eisele successfully fended off Tom Moustier’s shot with a good save.

Julian Kügel (22′) had the lead, but after a pass from Marcel Costly, he didn’t hit the ball properly in the six-yard box and sent it over the box without any effect. Although both teams generated promising goals, the score went into the break 0-0.

Shock for the Schanzer

In the second half there was a shock for the FCI. The Schanzer defense gave Jaka Potocnik (51′) too much space in a good position in front of the goal and was punished. The debutant in the starting line-up completed a cross from Arslan directly into the left corner. 0:1 – the deficit for Upper Bavaria.

The people of Ingolstadt tried to come up with a quick answer, but Golz kept getting in the way. FCI man Eisele, on the other hand, prevented a powerful shot from the guests from turning up the scoreboard further. Until the 77th minute: Kaito Mizuta increased the score to 0:2 for the guests.

A penalty gave the hosts the chance to score. Newly substituted Ramien Safin hit Yann Sturm on the edge of the penalty area. Kaygin confidently converted to 1:2. The final score.
