According to the results of Tuesday evening, there were two decisions in the race for the fifth Champions League-Platz. Due to the victory of FC Arsenal against Real Madrid (3-0), the Premier League in the remaining rounds can no longer be displaced from the first two ranks in the one-year ranking of the UEFA and can therefore plan with five participants in 2025/26. The opposite is the case with the Bundesliga.
Due to the defeat of FC Bayern against Inter Milan (1: 2), the three remaining German participants have no chance of moving past Laliga (21,678) in the last KO games at the last KO-Games. Only the series A (20,187), which also has three iron in the fire with Inter, Lazio Rome (Europa League) and the AC Florence (Conference League), can still be dangerous for the Spanish league.
Interesting: Last year, the order had looked the other way around. In the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund benefited as a fifth in the table from the Extraplatz, in which Serie A moved up Bologna. With eight participants in the three European competitions, all of the points collected are shared by eight – the Premier League and Laliga, on the other hand, started the race with only seven candidates and now benefit from it.
According to Champions League reform: four more starting places
The Champions League was fundamentally redesigned before this season. The group phase was replaced by a league – with 36 instead of 32 teams. As already described, two of these newly created places are awarded through the current association coefficients, the two more as follows: Starting place three goes to the club, which becomes the third in the table of the fifth best league in Europe according to the UEFA coefficient, which currently corresponds to the French Ligue 1. Starting position four gets a national title holder of a smaller league about the master path of the Champions League qualification.
For Germany, the 2025/26 season remains with seven representatives in the European Cup. The first four from the Bundesliga compete in the Champions League, the DFB Cup winner and the league fifths in the Europa League and the League sixth in the Conference League. However, there can still be shifts if VfB Stuttgart becomes a cup winner and also has a place in the Champions League or Europa League via the league (Regarding the rules: This is how the association club coefficient ranking is calculated).
