FIFA has announced the establishment of a peace prize, which it will award during the World Cup group draw on 5 December in Washington. The award, called the “Fifa Peace Prize”, will “recognize exceptional actions for peace”, the World Football Federation said on Wednesday. “In an increasingly unstable and divided world, it is crucial to recognize the exceptional contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and unite people in a spirit of peace,” said President Gianni Infantino.

Fifa said the award would be presented annually “on behalf of fans around the world”. US President Donald Trump, who has a close relationship with Infantino, was dropped from the Nobel Peace Prize race last month, despite pressure from other Republicans, several world leaders and himself. The relationships between Trump and FIFA are multiple, as confirmed by the appointment of his daughter Ivanka on the board of directors of a 100 million dollar educational project, partly financed by the sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup. It is therefore possible that the first prize winner is the US President himself.
