In a rather inflammatory video message, Rotterdam lawyer Haroon Raza calls on Muslim lawyers to attend a meeting under the banner of the Dutch Bar Association on October 30 in which a motion is proposed ‘with the support of Allah’ to recognize and condemn alleged genocide by Israel.

The lawyer states in the video that ‘Zionist lawyers’ want to attend the meeting to vote against the motion. “Which is outrageous,” Raza notes in a video on TikTok.

Raza previously made the news because he said he understands the bloody Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023 and linked an Israeli-Dutch settler on X to murder. It earned him a reprimand from the Discipline Board.

‘Jewish lawyers pushed into Zionist corner

The video has gone down the wrong way with many Jewish lawyers. Lawyer Benno Friedberg says he is shocked by the inflammatory words in the video.

“Jewish lawyers are being pushed into the Zionist corner in a very generalized way. This meeting was called in a very strange way, especially by the national dean whose office supports many pro-Palestine demonstrators suspected of violence,” said Friedberg, who plans to come to The Hague with many Jewish and non-Jewish colleagues to vote against the motion.

“I don’t know any Zionist lawyers,” Friedberg said. “We are Jewish lawyers in the Netherlands and we want to feel safe within our own profession.”

Dean of lawyers informed

Eric Trinthamer, spokesperson for the Dutch Bar Association, says that the national dean is aware of the animosity between groups of Jewish and Muslim lawyers, but that the Bar Association hopes that the meeting in a The Hague hotel will proceed calmly and with dignity. “The order organizes a professional meeting with all the necessary measures; location technology and safety,” says Trinthamer.

According to the spokesperson, the fact that the meeting was quickly called has nothing to do with the role of national dean Jeroen Soeteman within his own office. “Article 37 of the Advocates Act provides that a request from the bar to convene a members meeting must take place within two weeks,” says Trinthamer
