Feyenoord scared its own supporters on Woudestein in the opening phase by collecting a goal from Fernandes within ten minutes and the crazy thing was that that lead from Excelsior was also well deserved. The audience got the feeling that the team, in exactly the same setup as in Istanbul, was still in the atmosphere of the game in Turkey.

Chaotic initial phase at Excelsior – Feyenoord

The initial phase was chaotic, totally not like a top club against a team with one of the lowest budgets in the Eredivisie and hardly any money for purchases. The loss of ball in the first fifteen minutes was shocking and that was also the reason that Robin van Persie did not stay in his dug-out for a minute. The coach of Feyenoord guilded the lungs from his body to make things clear in particular his midfielders and attackers.

Van Persie ultimately succeeded in relief. Quinten Timber, who was responsible for the loss of ball from which the 1-0 from Excelsior came, made up for his mistake with a strong action and a shot on Excelsior goalkeeper Calvin Raatsie, who could initially still save but then saw how Ayase Ueda again gathered a goal.

The Japanese striker is under pressure because he could not live up to expectations last season and could not make indelible impression in the two duels with Fenerbahce. Now he already scored a goal in the competition against NAC and against Excelsior he also took a goal again, so that he walks one on one in the Eredivisie, just like Sem Steijn.

Sem Steijn does it again

Because Steijn, the man of 24 goals in the past competition, also put himself on the scoreboard again. Not with a tag but after his beautiful free kick in De Kuip against his old club NAC now a goal according to his other specialty. Digging in the sixteen-meter area when the pass from left striker Leo Sauer arrived there, he took D Ebal in the air, cast one glance at the goal and pushed low in the corner: 1-2.

For example, the damage in Kralingen was recovered early. Fortunately, Van Persie thought because in this way he could give some players a rest after an hour. With two wing defenders at the same time, he did what Arne Slot did the night earlier, only that with the predecessor of Van Persie on Anfield immediately yielded two goals.

That did not happen on Woudestein. Gijs Smal replaced the Australian Jordan Bos and Bart Nieuwkoop was allowed to replace Lotomba on the other flank. The Swiss right back had just received a base place from Van Persie and with that the coach showed that he did not drop the man who did not play for a year and was actually physically on in Istanbul earlier.

Lotomba sung by Feyenoord fans

On closer inspection, the legion does not. In the days after the elimination through Fenerbahce, LoMomba got Mountains (and terrible allegations) over him. But on Woudestein he was sung for minutes and that will have everything to do with the words of Van Persie, who believes that boundaries have been exceeded by supporters.

Gijs Smal was halfway through the second half as a substitute close to the 3-1 but saw Raatsie again make an excellent salvation. Immediately afterwards, Timber got the chance to increase the lead when he was allowed to take a free kick behind the goal thanks to the playback on the Excelsior keeper. Timber, who clearly did not leave Steijn, shot well.

Because Smal and Timber did not score, it actually continued to pinch for Van Persie at his youth club. With two shots on the post, Excelsior was close to a stunt.
