Feyenoord seems to be on its way to 2nd place and the infirmary is emptying. The Rotterdam team can come one step closer to the goal in Limburg against Fortuna Sittard.

Feyenoord’s away match against Fortuna Sittard can be used by coach Robin van Persie’s team to take 2nd place even more firmly in their hands.

The trainer has been looking cheerful and cheerful for a few weeks now, at least compared to a few weeks ago when he always approached the press room with a stormy face on his face.

The fact that Gijs Smal and Sem Steijn are training again will also be one of the reasons for the good mood of the Feyenoord trainer. “And Trauner got through the week after his return very well,” said Van Persie.

Feyenoord remains cautious with Givairo Read. The back will of course be in the match selection again against Fortuna Sittard, but it seems that Mats Deijl will be preferred.

Read must absolutely not get injured again on the way to a million-dollar transfer in the summer. “On Saturday we will see how Givairo got through this whole week. There is a chance that he will make minutes again, but it also depends on how the match goes.”

Last three games

His son Shaqueel van Persie is also training outside again. It is uncertain whether the striker will still make minutes this season, but the youngster will certainly enter the summer fit.

In the last three matches Feyenoord plays against clubs that no longer care about anything. Fortuna Sittard is safe, AZ has already received its ticket for European football and PEC is probably also ‘safe’ on the last match day.

Van Persie sees that as an advantage or a disadvantage. “I don’t think any team is really ready yet,” says the coach. “Players also play for their future, right?”

More careful

“Ultimately, every team trains to win a match,” the coach continued. “The stadium is full again in Sittard, so I cannot imagine that Fortuna will perform less than they normally would. As a sportsman you want to get the most out of all matches.”

In Sittard, Feyenoord will again be a bit more cautious than in the first months of the season. “In recent matches we indeed started a little lower, so that the opponent runs into us,” says Van Persie.

“That suits me very well. That is also the feedback we receive from the player group. So then it’s really good for now. But I am also open to continuing this in the future.”
