Since 1950, the number of accidental drownings in the Netherlands has fallen sharply, especially among young children. The decline has slowed down since the 1980s. In recent years, an average of about four people per year have died in Limburg as a result of accidental drowning. In 2017 (7 drownings), 2018 (8) and 2020 (7) there were outliers.
