THEThe bathroom is a personal oasis of daily well-being: Once the door is closed, you regenerate yourself, relax, take care of yourself, trying to forget the fatigue of the day. But how to create a perfect serene and peaceful environment? Feng shui comes to the rescue: «Often considered an “energetically delicate” place, the bathroom actually has great potential in contributing to the balance and well-being of the entire home” explains Valentina Poppi, architect specialized in Feng Shui Architecture.
Feng Shui for the bathroom: how to transform it into an oasis of well-being
In Feng Shui philosophy, the bathroom is an important place because it is where a lot of water flowsone of the five fundamental elements according to Chinese philosophy. Water, in fact, represents vital energy and therefore the Qi. Should always flow calmly so that you can maintain the balance between Yin and Yang.
«The bathroom is not just a place of passage: it is one transformation space. It is where one gets rid of the superfluous, physical and energetic, and regenerates the body. With a little awareness and care, this environment can also become a small domestic temple of well-being, capable of restoring energy, clarity and lightness to those who experience it.”
1. Pay attention to the location of the room
«In classical Chinese feng shui, each space has a precise energetic role and can become a ally in promoting the harmonious flow of Qi, the vital energy. The bathroom is an environment where energy flows in a positive wayas long as it is cared for, clean and organized with awareness. In contemporary homes, it often happens that the bathroom is located on the upper floor, aligned with the entrance door. In feng shui this is not a problem, as long as the space is bright and tidy: Qi, in fact, flows freely where it finds balance and attention”.
For this reason, as the expert specifies, it would be better keep the door of bain hall closed, so as to help contain ea keep the energy flow of the water harmonious.

Given the importance of the location of the bathroom, it would be important to evaluate its position carefully. «In fact, there are configurations to avoid. In multi-storey houses, it is not ideal for the bathroom to be positioned exactly above or below the kitchen stove area. In feng shui, the “toilet over the stove” axis represents a conflict between the elements of Water and Fire, two opposing energies that can create imbalances over time».
Also pay attention to the bathroom-bedroom relationship. As often happens in newer homes, the bathroom is in the room. «It would be better to create a hallway between the two rooms which acts as a barrier, so as to maintain the correct energetic separation between the rest area and the water area, as the expert specifies”.
«Another piece of advice: be careful if the bathroom door opens directly in front of a staircase: this arrangement tends to slow down the flow of Qimaking it more stagnant. In this case, a plant or a light curtain may be enough to mitigate the direct passage of energy.”
2. Soft colors and natural essences
«In modern feng shui, it is important that the bathroom is well lit, ventilated and enriched with details that promote relaxation. For example, it is important to choose soft colors that inspire relaxation and serenity.” So yes to shades inspired by water, light blue, light green, blue, but also to natural ones such as beige and rope.
Fundamental: avoid colors in red-orange nuances that refer to fire, precisely because this is the kingdom of water. So, if you want to add a lively shade, that’s fine but only in accessories, for example towels. «They can also be included small natural elements such as plants, light wood or stone, to recall the five elements, fire, earth, water, metal and wood.”
It is then fundamental to choose an aroma for this room, «possibly of natural essences or aromatic oils such as lavender, eucalyptus or citrus, all suitable for purifying and toning the space. Furthermore, it is important to encourage air recirculation: lStagnant energy slows down psychophysical well-being».
3. The right light
What light to choose? «A soft and above all warm light better promotes a relaxing atmosphere. No to cold light bulbs, much less neon.” Important, if possible, let in lots of natural light which, in addition to illuminating it, helps to keep it fresh and chase away stagnant energy from the room. Don’t forget, if there is natural light, to also place plants in the bathroom, it is better to choose those that love humidity. They not only decorate but purify the air and symbolize vitality.
4. No to opposing mirrors
Finally, mirrors also play an important role in the home and in the feng shui philosophy. If on the one hand indeed they increase brightness, on the other hand they also convey energy. For this reason, it is important to study its position. For example, it is sIt is recommended to hang one in front of the other because you risk trapping energy as well as creating disorientation and possible discomfort for those in the room.
