Defense against bad luck with injuries

With Jayden Oosterwolde and Rodrigo Becão, Fenerbahce are missing two defenders with cruciate ligament tears until the end of the season. In order not to lose touch with league leaders Galatasaray (six points ahead) in the title race, two new signings are to be signed as replacements this winter. While an agreement with Frankfurt’s Tuta has recently become less likely, the first seems to have been found in Diego Carlos from Aston Villa.

According to Turkish transfer reporter Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, an agreement has been reached with the Premier League club and the Brazilian centre-back. The transfer fee for the Villans is 11 million euros in line with the market value, paid in installments over four years. Only for the eighth time in the club’s history have the Canaries spent a double-digit million sum on a new signing (among the record transfers).
Diego Carlos cost 31 million euros in the summer of 2022 when he came to Birmingham from Sevilla FC. After 36 appearances last season, he has only appeared in ten Premier League games this season. “The lack of playing time is partly due to a foot injury, but the Brazilian was also often on the bench,” explains Ben Littlemore, Area Manager UK at Transfermarkt. “With Tyrone Mings now back from the cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for most of last season, Mings, Ezri Konsa and the injured Pau Torres appear to be ahead of Diego Carlos in the rankings.”
For Unai Emery’s team, which as eighth in the Premier League is once again within reach of international business and is fifth in the Champions League with 13 points from six games, the loss of Diego Carlos would be anything but irrelevant. “With Torres expected to be out until March, Aston Villa could be a bit tight at the centre-back position. “We should therefore take action before the transfer window closes on February 3rd.”
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the Villans have increased their efforts for Loic Badé (24), who, like Diego Carlos before him, impressed at Sevilla FC. The Frenchman initially came to the LaLiga club on loan six months after the Brazilian’s departure, and they signed him away from Stade Rennes for 12 million euros at the end of the season. Badé was able to more than double his market value in Seville to 25 million euros, and his achievements were rewarded with his first nomination for Les Bleus last October.
