Stephanie Turner at the University of Maryland decides not to cross the foil with Redmond Sullivan: “She is a female tournament, I don’t fight against a man”. For her black card
An American screenwriter, Stephanie Turner, was disqualified for not having faced a transgender opponent in a foil race. It happened during a tournament at the University of Maryland last Sunday. Turner, who competes for the Philadelphia Academy of Fencing, knelt rather than competing against Redmond Sullivan of the ICONIC FENCING CLUB. He had already played four previous meetings in the competition, and was disqualified according to the rules of the International Fencing Federation that prevent shielders from not competing.

Sullivan then ranked 24th among the 39 participants in the race. “I knew what I had to do, the Federation had not listened to women’s objections regarding her gender suitability policy,” Turner said to Fox News Digital. “Sullivan believed that I would start pulling fencing. Instead, I was genuflected immediately, I looked at the referee and I said: ‘I’m sorry, I can’t do it. I am a woman and this is a female tournament. And I don’t fight against a man’.”

What was Sullivan’s reaction? Turner also told the brief dialogue with the failure to oppose. “He asked me if I was fine, he had not understood what was happening. I replied that I was sorry, that I had much respect for him but I didn’t think it is right to pull fencing.” He did not change his mind even compared to Sullivan’s reply that pointed out to her how by regulation he had every right to be there. The referees showed her the black tag, which is extracted for anti -sports behavior for serious infringements: Turner was excluded, not for its position against the inclusion of transgender people -as US Fencing has clarified in the intervention at Fox News -, but simply for having refused to get on the platform, thus violating the regulation.

Turner awaits consequences for his decision. “I don’t think that from now on it will be easy for me to go to fencing tournaments. I don’t think it will be easy for me to train.” His actions aroused the praise of the legend of retired tennis Martina Navratilova, who posted the video of the deception on social media. “This is what happens when the athletes protest!”, The writing Navratilova on X. “There is still someone who thinks this is right? I am furious, ashamed you”, aimed at the American Federation.
