Felix Magath attacks Thomas Tuchel after an argument with Didi Hamann

Felix Magath spoke about Thomas Tuchel. The way Bayern’s coach appears in public upsets the 70-year-old.

The ongoing dispute between FC Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel and former national player Didi Hamann continues to preoccupy the sports world. The events were also discussed in the football talk “Doppelpass” on Sport1. Legendary coach Felix Magath found clear words for Tuchel’s behavior: “He is far too sensitive, far too incompetent for the position he has,” said Magath on Sunday morning.

The reason for Magath’s statement: Tuchel had previously rejected an apology from Hamann for his criticism of the Bayern coach – and followed up. “The things that happened when I visited the fan club were taken completely out of context. Statements were deliberately made that were not true,” said Tuchel in an interview after the 3-1 (1-1) win against Borussia Mönchengladbach with ran, Sport1 and ZDF.

As a reminder: During a visit to the fan club last Sunday, the 50-year-old answered a general question that he would be interested in foreign countries again and emphasized that Spain in particular had “an exceptional league”. Hamann then expressed sharp criticism of Tuchel.

Magath directly: “He should have known that beforehand”

A day later, Bayern complained in a statement about “unobjective statements” about Tuchel without mentioning Hamann’s name. “He didn’t say that he would like to train in Barcelona or Spain. I would like to apologize to Thomas Tuchel and Bayern for that,” said Hamann. Tuchel, however, was now unforgiving: “We were all shocked at what he made of it, so it doesn’t matter whether he apologized.”

Magath, who coached Munich from 2004 to 2007, cannot understand Tuchel’s move; the coach should rather be above things. “He should have known that beforehand. This is not a new way of reporting on Bayern, it has always been like this,” said the 70-year-old in “Dopa” in reference to Tuchel’s complaint about the “extremely personal” and “unobjective” reporting .

Magath remembers that it was no different during his stay in Munich: “FC Bayern was already complaining. That was already the case in my time and hasn’t changed.” And further: “I won the championship and cup twice with Bayern and that wasn’t enough either.”

Effenberg defends Tuchel

t-online columnist and “Dopa” expert Stefan Effenberg then intervened in the broadcast and defended the Bayern coach. In his opinion, the circumstances have not been easy for Tuchel in his ten months as Bayern coach so far. “He came into an incredibly difficult situation, there was a lot of unrest in the club,” said Effenberg. In addition, there were changes in management due to the expulsion of Hasan Salihamidžić and Oliver Kahn as well as the restructuring and the new addition of Christoph Freund.

The thinned-out Munich squad, which Tuchel repeatedly publicly criticized, also plays a role “and the fact that everything doesn’t go smoothly (…), I am still of the opinion that he did a very good job for FC Bayern.” Effenberg explained further.

For Tuchel and the team around captain Manuel Neuer, it’s next Saturday in the top Bundesliga game against the current league leaders Bayer Leverkusen (from 6.30 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online).
