FC Volendam has booked the first victory of the season. They were too strong for FC Utrecht at home: 1-0. A goal from Robert Mühren was enough for the three points. The victory means Volendam is out of last place.
The match was under high tension due to several factors. On the one hand, because there were no away fans of FC Utrecht in Volendam. The local triangle had indications that confrontations would take place again. Things got completely out of hand after the match last year. On the other hand, both teams are in the depths of the Premier League. Enough ingredients for an exciting duel.
Volendam was helped in the opening phase by a red card for Nick Viergever. He made a rash foul on Lequincio Zeefuik and after VAR interference, the yellow card was converted into a red. Logically, Volendam had many chances in the remainder of the first half. Robert Mühren in particular scored the opening goal twice, but found goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas in his way both times.

The goal that was already in the air before half-time came quickly in the second half. Garang Kuol went on an adventure, passed Mark van der Maarel and passed the ball to Mühren. He scored: 1-0. Volendam had no trouble at all against Utrecht, but it remained unnecessarily tense due to the small score. This gave Mats Seuntjens a gigantic opportunity. The substitute was poorly defended and was able to dribble in a straight line towards the goal.
However, he shot the ball full onto the post next to Mio Backhaus, allowing Volendam to get away well. Kuol could have decided the game in the final phase. He received a nice ball from Calvin Twigt, but could not make it 2-0. Utrecht then created another good opportunity via Seuntjens. However, his header was saved by Backhaus. Despite Utrecht’s chances, Volendam was the winner. The last place in the Premier League has been relinquished to the visitors.
After the international match, FC Volendam will play against RKC in Waalwijk. The kick-off on October 21 is at 6:45 PM.
