After midfielder Christopher Buchtmann (29), central defender Philipp Ziereis (29) is the longest-serving professional at FC St. Pauli. It is still unclear whether and to what extent the captain will continue in view of his expiring contract. Apparently there are enough options: like that “Image” reports, clubs from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga as well as clubs from Major League Soccer are interested in Ziereis.
The New York Red Bulls are said to have courted the veteran as early as 2018, but at the time he decided to extend the contract with the Hamburg team. Ziereis’ management has now confirmed to the newspaper that some things are conceivable. “A lot of talks are currently being held in all directions,” said consultant Patrick Williams.
Right-footed Ziereis has played a total of 155 games (one goal, four assists) for FC St. Pauli since moving from Regensburg in 2013. In the meantime, the defensive man has been stopped by injuries for longer periods of time. At the end of 2018, it was briefly said that Liverpool FC at least had him “on the radar”.
