First a draw against Borussia Dortmund, then a derby victory at HSV. The start of the season of FC St. Pauli went exceptionally well. And the third matchday was also a success.
Three games, seven points: FC St. Pauli will end the third matchday in fourth place. The “Kiezkicker” from Hamburg defeated FC Augsburg 2-1 after 0: 1 deficit. Fabian Rieder had initially put the guests in the lead (16th minute), but a penalty from Andreas Hountondji (45th) and a direct free kick by Danel Sinani (78th) led to the turn in the Millerntor Stadium. Augsburg’s head coach Sandro Wagner also saw the yellow card shortly before the break whistle.
“I expect Augsburg as the coach gives himself all the time: hungry and funny,” said Pauli coach Alexander Blessin before the game. However, he rejoiced, they had recently “allowed many chances”.
On Sunday afternoon, however, the opposite was initially the case in front of 29,546 spectators in the sold -out Millerntor Stadium. St. Pauli, who started with the same eleven as with the derby victory against Hamburger SV, had a lot of difficulty, Augsburg was defensively stable and set needles from time to time. So even after a good quarter of an hour when Han-Noah Massengo flanked the second post from the left, where Rieder had little effort from a short distance.
Imposing: Augsburg’s new offensive player scored directly with his first shot in the FCA jersey. In addition, a series continued: the sixth Augsburg goal in this Bundesliga season was also achieved by a different player.
And St. Pauli? I still had problems finding a gap in the well-organized guest defense. In the last third there was no precision. It only became turbulent in the final phase of the first round. The hosts now increased the pressure – and benefited from a VAR check before compensation. After a blocked Hountondji shot, referee Harm Osmers decided on a penalty in the view of the video images. In the heated injury time, Wagner saw the yellow card because he threw a ball onto the field. Actually there should have been red, luck for Wagner.
In the second round, the brown-whites took command. Mathias Pereira Lage (47th) and Sinani (57.) found their master in Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, a low shot of Pauli-Neu access Martijn Kaars rushed by centimeter (65.). But the guests also remained dangerous with their counterattacks, in the 69th minute Nikola Vasilj saved his team with a spectacular double parade from another deficit. A little later, Sinani scored worth seeing from the right edge of the penalty area.
