Southampton had gone into the new season with great hopes. But it is already clear at the beginning of April: next year it will be back in the championship.
FC Southampton has to go to the second class-and earlier than ever another team in Premier League history. After a 1: 3 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, the descent of the “Saints” has already been determined seven game days before the end of the season.
Southampton had only returned to the Premier League via the Play-Off final last season. Now the team of the two-time German international Armel Bella-Kotchap is only ten points after 31 games. The gap to the saving bank is already 22 points. So far, the club has only won two victories.
Against Tottenham, the guests were 0: 2 after two goals from Brennan Johnson (13th/42nd minute). Mateus Fernandes shortened in the 90th minute – but hope lasted briefly. In added time, Mathys Tel hit the penalty point (90th+6th) and thus made the home win for the Spurs perfect. The former Bayern player scored his first goal in the Premier League. Bella-Kotchap remained without use.
The team of team manager Ivan Jurić is at risk of another negative record: If Southampton no longer gets a point by the end of the season, the worst yield of Premier League history would be equalized. So far, Derby County keeps this with eleven points from the 2007/08 season.
