FC Schalke 04 | Knappen legend sure: “FC Bayern are scared of us”

With last-minute victories against Werder Bremen and Mainz 05, FC Schalke 04 have left the Bundesliga relegation zone. A club legend is certain: There are also points for the royal blues at FC Bayern.

For the first time since matchday 8, FC Schalke 04 is back in a non-relegation zone. After the 2-1 win against Bremen and the 3-2 win in the 102nd minute at Mainz 05, coach Thomas Reis’ team has to go to FC Bayern on Saturday (3:30 p.m.). Two ex-Schalke players are firmly convinced that something is also possible with the leaders of the table.

“They’re a bit out of shape at the moment,” said club idol Rüdiger Abramczik at the “Fussball Legenden Talk” in the “Recklinghäuser Zeitung” newspaper about the German record champions.

The 67-year-old, who scored 1-0 for Schalke in FC Bayern’s first home defeat in the Olympic Stadium in 1974 (final score 2-0), does not see Bayern Munich in the best of shape: “They win their games – whatever – very close, like in Bremen. But if we’re in good shape and get down to business, I can well imagine that we’ll make ends meet.”

Schalke legend knows how to crack Bayern Munich

Abramczik, who played as a winger at Schalke from 1973 to 1980, went even further. “Bayern Munich are a bit scared of us. That’s historically the case. It’s almost like a derby for them,” he explained.

Abramczik gave a tip to the Royal Blues, who are two points ahead of VfB Stuttgart in 15th place three games before the end of the season: “Get through the fight to the game.” FC Bayern still have “a very good squad,” warned the former cult kicker: “Once they’re running, it’s going to be difficult to stop the car.”

Former Schalke youth player Siegfried Bönighausen, who took part in the discussion with Abramczik, also sees good chances for the royal blues.

“I think Bayern are struggling with themselves the most at the moment. The change of coach didn’t do them any good. They’re just too insecure,” believes the former Bundesliga professional from Rot-Weiss Essen, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum . And followed up: “It doesn’t have it in many parts of the team either. It’s stuck. Maybe that’s our chance.”
