FC Bayern polarizes like no second football club in Germany. And not only up to date, as the document “FC Hollywood” of the ZDF proves.

The turbulent years of FC Bayern Munich still attract a large audience. The ZDF documentary “FC Hollywood-FC Bayern and the crazy 90s” was called six million times in just one month. This made it the most successful documentation series that ever existed in the ZDF media library.

According to the broadcaster, each of the five episodes achieved an average of 1.2 million calls. The first episode entitled “Das Duel”, which reached the previous maximum value with 1.8 million views, was particularly in demand. The episode illuminates the euphoria around Jürgen Klinsmann’s move to Bavaria in 1995 as well as the subsequent conflicts with Lothar Matthäus.

ZDF editor-in-chief Bettina Schausten sees the success of the documentary confirmation of the broadcaster’s course, sports documentation and portraits of athletes to further expand in order to achieve a younger audience.

The unlimited series not only shows the development of FC Bayern to the global brand, but also the change in football to the global entertainment industry. In addition to Klinsmann and Matthäus, former Bayern stars such as Mario Basler, Stefan Effenberg, Thomas Helmer and Mehmet Scholl also have their say in the documentary.
