Statistically, the record is broken

Will Harry Kane break Robert Lewandowski’s 41-goal record? The top striker from German record champions FC Bayern Munich doesn’t want to bet on that. “Other people should bet on me. I’m certainly in a good position at the moment. But if you look closely at the record: Lewandowski even missed a few games, but he scored a lot of hat tricks during that time,” the 32-year-old told “Bild”.

Kane, who was the top scorer twice recently, is once again clearly leading the list of the best goalgetter in the Bundesliga with 30 goals. He still has ten match days left to reach and possibly exceed Lewandowski’s mark. The Pole had 31 goals after 24 match days in his fabulous 2020/21 season, but was still missing in four games after that. “It will be difficult to beat him. I think the chances are pretty even at the moment whether I make it or not,” said the Englishman. With an average of 1.25 goals per game, he would statistically draw level with Lewandowski on matchday 33 and ultimately set a new record.

In the hunt for the impressive number of goals of his fellow striker, who improved Gerd Müller’s record of almost half a century to 41 goals, Kane revealed his strategy. “I don’t really look at the records themselves and say to myself: ‘I want to break this record now.’ What I do: I divide the games into stages. For example, from now until the international break. We have five games there. Then I ask: Can I score five goals? Or another number,” said England’s national team captain. He would be “happy” with five goals during this period.

Kane continued: “That’s how I break it down – and less, by just looking at the Lewandowski record, or four doubles in a row, or whatever. I don’t look at that, I look at what I think I should achieve. Sometimes I go for more goals, sometimes I go for fewer goals. But I always try to set goals for every five or six games.”
