CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen from FC Bayern Munich described the departure from Mathys Tel to Tottenham Hotspur, which was brought across the stage shortly before the end of the change phase, with many “trials and tribulations”. At the Spobis sports business conference in Hamburg, he said: “There were various inquiries and options. In the end we did it quite well, I think. “

The 19 -year -old striker only switched from Munich to London late Monday evening, on a loan base until the end of the season including the purchase option. This is said to be 60 million euros including bonuses, and the record champions also collects EUR 10 million. The fact that the deal came about was also due to Dreesen’s good relationship with the Tottenham boss: “It was something special, also because I know Daniel Levy well.” The poker around Harry Kane (31) had dragged on a week and a half ago.

A change on loan on a loan was repeatedly discussed in the course of the first half of the season because the Frenchman could not prevail under Vincent Kompany. According to “Sky”, Bayern already agreed with Eintracht Frankfurt, but Tel refused. Dreesen: “He is only 19 years old. It depends on where the player wants to go. The player is the most important thing. I think we did it quite well. (…) He was substituted, but there was no development. He wanted to prevail in December. Then there was a change of meaning. Then he said: ‘I can’t get any further in my career.’ “

Whether Tel finally left Bavaria in summer is “natural” on the player himself or hanging from “his performance”. For FCB, he has scored 16 goals and seven templates in 83 games since 2022 – he did not score this season. Tels market value has therefore dropped from 50 million to currently EUR 30 million since December 2023.

Bavaria’s Dreesen criticizes Bundesliga clubs in foreign marketing

Dreesen also called for more efforts by the Bundesliga clubs for international marketing. “It is not right that two years ago only Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich were traveling in the more distant abroad during the summer break,” said the 57-year-old at the Spobis Sportbusiness Conference in Hamburg.

Dreesen asked: “How do we want to expect the Bundesliga to be visible outside of the screen?” The clubs should be tangible. “As a team, we also have to be experienced in a stadium, and that includes moving in distant countries, whether this is now in Asia or in North America or wherever,” said the head of the German record champions. “Of course in the markets, where we also believe, the potential is.”

English clubs are much more active abroad

The Bundesliga receives around 200 million euros from foreign marketing. The income of the English Premier League, on the other hand, is more than 2 billion euros. Two years ago, two Bundesliga clubs were traveling in further countries, but 13 Premier League clubs were traveling in summer, Dreesen said: “That can’t be right.”

It is “a long, long way, and as Bavaria we have to find our own way to add other measures for us.”
