A young Bayern star criticizes his own team in an interview. Head coach Kompany reprimands him in front of the camera and vehemently contradicts him.

After FC Bayern’s difficult 1-0 win at VfL Wolfsburg, head coach Vincent Kompany vehemently rejected Tom Bischof’s critical statements and even spoke of a mistake by the 20-year-old.

What had happened? Bischof had explained to Sky: “We just don’t do the little basics anymore. We’re missing a bit of counter-pressing immediately after losing the ball. I noticed that from the outside. That’s why we take the long routes – and concede so many goals.”

Shortly afterwards, Kompany was also asked about the statements. Sky presenter Sebastian Hellmann asked the Bayern coach: “You have just heard Tom Bischof’s interview where he said that the little basics were missing a bit. You listened with great interest. Do you agree with him?”

The Belgian initially reacted with a laugh, but then became clear and firm in his answer. “No, of course not. The young player made a mistake in this interview,” said Kompany.

The Bayern coach then explained his view of the game in more detail. “You can’t counter-press a hundred times if you lose the ball or lose the ball quickly. The problem is not the intention behind the counter-press, otherwise I would see it in training and say: You can’t win a game like that.”

From his point of view, the team lost the necessary calm after a good start. “The point is that you don’t always have to have the feeling that you have to score three or four goals in the first ten to 15 minutes and then the others are just lying on the ground. That doesn’t happen like that.” And further: “We started well for ten minutes, then lost our patience a bit and then it just gets more difficult.”

At the end, Kompany announced with a smile that he wanted to speak to Bishop again. He also hopes that the Bayern professional will watch the interview again later on the bus. The coach concluded: “I’m sure he’ll say exactly the same thing in a few years.” Bischof was back in the starting line-up in Wolfsburg for the first time since tearing a muscle fiber and – apart from a fatal bad pass in the final phase – delivered a solid performance. However, he was much more in the spotlight afterwards because of his interview.
