Even on Monday there was still no agreement between FC Bayern and its regular player Dayot Upamecano on a contract extension. The poker around the defender has still not been decided, and there is still a risk of a free transfer in the summer. However, record national player Lothar Matthäus once again urgently warned the Munich team not to give in on the matter.

“Bayern went to their limits with Upamecano. The offer that the club made to the player is outstanding. Normally, when you are presented with such a contract, you have to sign the next day,” said Lothar Matthäus in his “Sky” column.

The 64-year-old became even clearer and added: “I am of the opinion that Bayern Munich is not allowed to play these games. The club actually has a duty to say: ‘Now I’ll put a stop to it at some point. Then not Upamecano beyond the current season, but we’ll try to bring in a new player!'”

Until recently, Upamecano had remained open about not accepting the club’s offer, which was already several weeks old.

Matthäus suspects: Hoeneß will soon get too colorful

TV expert Matthäus now speculated that things could now be too colorful, especially for FC Bayern’s club patron: “I think that Uli Hoeneß won’t put up with this much longer and will instead say: ‘If you don’t sign, we’ll withdraw the offer and look for a new player.'”

According to the 1990 World Cup captain, it is completely incomprehensible that the central defender, who works under head coach Vincent Kompany at FC Bayern, has not long since extended his contract with the German record champions.

“Upamecano has built something with FC Bayern, he feels comfortable in Munich, he is valued by the club and the coach and he says that he has a great connection with Vincent Kompany. You can’t pay for all of that with money,” said Matthäus, who himself became German champion seven times with FC Bayern.

Schlotterbeck or Vuskovic as possible successors

He once again brought up Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund or even Luka Vuskovic from Hamburger SV as the first candidates for the possible successor to Upamecano.

The world footballer from 1990 really went into raptures about the HSV youngster: “I would also trust Luka Vuskovic to be his man at an even bigger club than HSV at any time. I saw him live in the stadium for the first time on Saturday in Hamburg, he not only has the strength of a tackle and a threat to head the ball, but he plays courageously, cleverly, calmly, he organizes and directs. At 18 years old he is already as far along as he is Upamecano. […] Vuskovic has only been playing in the Bundesliga for six months, but he’s doing an outstanding job because of his personality.”

Due to his long-term commitment to Tottenham Hotspur until 2030, Matthäus speculated that a permanent transfer would be even more expensive than that of BVB star Nico Schlotterbeck, who only has one year left on his contract in Dortmund.
