Aleksandar Pavlovic and Michael Olise (both FC Bayern) celebrate Olise's goal against Paris Saint-Germain.

As of: May 5, 2026 • 6:34 a.m

When FC Bayern plays, goals are currently guaranteed. No matter whether in the top games of the Champions League or in everyday Bundesliga life. Experts criticize Munich and PSG’s offensive style of play – but they don’t want to hear about it.

3:3, 5:4, 4:3, 2:0, 4:2, 4:3 – FC Bayern’s latest results read more like the final scores in an ice hockey game than those of a top soccer team. The Munich people have in the Bundesliga breaks the decades-old goal scoring record (101 goals) long since pulverized, but they also take a lot of hits. On average, there have been more than five goals per game in FCB’s last 18 games.

“Game of the Century”: Praise from around the world for PSG against Bayern

Many fans, journalists and experts are raving about Kompany football. Especially those Champions League appearances against Real Madrid and that 4:5 spectacle against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals received hymns of praise. “La Gazzetta dello Sport” wrote about the “game of the century”.Ex-FC Bayern playerAlexander Zickler said on Sunday at Blickpunkt Sport: “Everything is becoming more intense, faster, more aggressive. I think that’s good. But I also like it when the boys can kick. At Paris and Bayern they can do both.”

Rooney, Seedorf, Melli: Star review on Offensive madness

But not everyone can benefit from the spectacle of football. “The defense of both teams was really bad,” said former world-class striker Wayne Rooney on Amazon Prime, criticizing the Parisian coach: “Luis Enrique is a top coach. When his team was 5-2 ahead, he should have told them: Let’s close the shop and go on the defensive.”

Clarence Seedorf also didn’t give both teams a good report and bet on a Champions League winner from the much less spectacular second semi-final between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid. The first leg ended 1-1 – both goals were scored from the penalty spot. “Tell me a sport in which you can win without proper defense. I don’t think it exists,” explained Seedorf, who won the trophy a total of five times as a player with AC Milan, Real Madrid and Ajax Amsterdam.

“I feel really sick” – Melli with a tirade of insults

Former Italian striker Alessandro Melli made even more drastic comments on Facebook: “I’m swimming against the tide, but between VAR and a game that doesn’t involve defense, man marking or a midfield block, this football makes me downright sick,” wrote Melli and continued: “Do you know who loves this football? The TV channels, the commentators and the fans who are happy about goals but don’t understand anything about this game.”

“Shitty opinions” – Enrique counters criticism

PSG coach Enrique sees it completely differently. “It was the best game I’ve experienced as a coach,” he said at the press conference on Tuesday, visibly enthusiastic after his team’s 5-4 win. “An incredible rhythm, both teams tried to play offensively and show their quality,” summarized the Spaniard: “I think everyone had fun in the game.”

When asked a few days later that not everyone was having fun and that there were also critical voices about the way PSG and FC Bayern played, Enrique reacted quite bluntly: “It’s like in life, there are opinions everywhere. And I don’t think it’s important to respect all opinions,” explained Enrique and went one better: “Because if it’s a shitty opinion, you don’t have to respect it.”

Max Eberl defends Bayern’s DNA: “Perversely awesome” instead of 1-0

And sports director Max Eberl also doesn’t think much of the criticism of Munich’s spectacular games: “You don’t want to change the basic DNA,” said Eberl. “The game against Paris on Tuesday was perversely awesome, if I can put it a bit casually. That’s what football is all about: offense. Then you often say: ‘Yes, but the defense.’ We could also have other games where the defense dominates. Then it’s 1-0 with a corner goal. What do you want? We have chosen the DNA to actively play football.”

Guardiola’s sharp joke: Why Stockport was more important

By the way, the “strongest” criticism of the duel between PSG and FCB came from Pep Guardiola. The former FC Bayern coach was spotted in the stands by English third division club Stockport County during the Champions League game on Tuesday and explained his decision with a salty dose of irony.

“The day before I looked at the schedule, saw PSG against Bayern Munich and said to myself: ‘What a disastrous game. The coaches are not good, really shitty players,'” Guardiola said dryly and added: “I love English football, so I chose Stockport.” It is doubtful that Guardiola will make this mistake again in the second leg on Wednesday – after all, Stockport have a free game.
