FC Bayern only wobbles briefly: record champions lead Cologne

The Munich team experienced a turbulent first round at the “Effzeh”. For a moment it looks like a sensation – but then Bayern strike back. A man stands out again.
FC Bayern Munich remains unbeatable this season and is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. In an at times heated Bundesliga duel against 1. FC Cologne, coach Vincent Kompany’s team clearly won 4-1 (2-1) and can continue to dream of the next “double” of championship and cup victory that they have been longing for for years.
Ragnar Ache had given the hosts an undeserved lead in a turbulent first half of the game (31′), Bayern were wobbling enormously in this phase. Just a few minutes later, the Munich team turned the game around through Luis Díaz (36′) and Harry Kane (38′). However, Díaz was offside before his goal, but the video referee only exists in the DFB Cup from the round of 16 onwards. After the break, Kane (64th) and Michael Olise (72nd) made everything clear again.
For the previously flawless Bayern, it was the 14th success in a row since the start of the season. Munich has thus replaced AC Milan (13 wins, 1992/93) and set a starting record in Europe’s top leagues.
Kompany had announced that his team was “very hungry for this trophy”. “It’s not just the fans’ desire for the title, it’s something we live by,” he emphasized. Cologne coach Lukas Kwasniok also recognized: “They definitely want to win the treble.” It is “always difficult” against Bayern, but currently “almost impossible,” predicted the 44-year-old and therefore called for “eggs in the bag.”
The outsider quickly demonstrated the necessary courage and forced an open exchange of blows at eye level. Cologne became dangerous, especially from set pieces. Jonas Urbig, who moved from Cologne to Munich in January, defused the attempts by Ísak Jóhannesson (11th) and Ache (16th). When Ache rose highest after another corner from Jóhannesson, Urbig could no longer prevent the deficit.
And Bayern? The guests initially missed their dominant appearance and efficient finishes. Díaz failed twice against FC Cup goalkeeper and world champion Ron-Robert Zieler (8th/19th), Kane lacked precision in the header game (19th/21st).
