When FC Bayern meets Pafos this Tuesday evening, the opponent has many internationally unknown players in the squad – and a former superstar.
A Brazilian construction company had to pay around 5,000 euros for an advertising poster five years ago. “If you hire amateurs to realize your family’s dream, it is almost like a 1: 7,” it said on the poster. In addition to the lettering, the image of the crying David Luiz was seen, taken after the Brazilian debacle in the 2014 World Cup semi-final against Germany. Luiz sued the company and got right.
The game in Belo Horizonte was the low point of the central defender’s career. “Sorry to everyone, sorry for the entire Brazilian people. I just wanted to see my compatriots smile,” he said at the time in tears on Brazilian television.
The World Cup title is still denied to this day. David Luiz celebrated many other successes for this. With the Chelsea FC, he won the Premier League, the Champions League, the Europa League and the Cup. With Paris Saint-Germain, he won the French Double and also celebrated several titles in his homeland in Brazil with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. David Luiz has already completed more than 750 competitive games in his career. But in the end it is not yet.
This Tuesday evening he meets FC Bayern with the Cypric outsider Pafos FC in the Champions League (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online). For the first time in the club’s history, the club qualified for the premier class. Pafos had thrown out Pafos in the play-offs Red Star Belgrade in a dramatic way, only in the 89th minute of the second leg was the decisive goal.
David Luiz has been under contract in Pafos for almost two months. The transfer was a coup for the previously unknown club. Finally, a real star came to Cyprus with Luiz. Usually Pafos gets bank players from Portugal or Belgium or buys in the third English league or Israel. The names of rank and names are rare. Even die-hard Bundesliga fans are hardly known to the two former Hertha players Derick Luckassen and Ivan Šunjić in the Pafos squad. But David Luiz, they know it.
