FC Bayern | Matthew compares himself to Musiala

For many years, Lothar Matthäus not only shaped FC Bayern, but also the German national football team. To this day, the 62-year-old is the DFB team’s record player. However, he believes that one of Munich’s current stars can break his record.

At the age of 20, Jamal Musiala has already played 25 international matches for the German national team. FC Bayern’s offensive star is one of the few hopefuls of the DFB team, which has recently lost touch with the world’s best and is under enormous pressure seven months before the start of the home European Championship.

Lothar Matthäus has demonstrated for decades how to deal with public expectations. As an indispensable driver, he led the national team to the World Cup title in Italy in 1990, and his CV includes a total of 150 appearances with the Federal Eagle on his jersey – a record that still stands today.

One or two current DFB stars are preparing to break Matthäus’ record. For today’s TV expert, losing the title would not be a problem.

“I’m not thinking about it. When the time comes, we’ll see,” said the former Bayern professional in an interview with “kicker”.

FC Bayern: Matthäus compares himself to Musiala

When asked which generation would be most capable of producing a player with more than 150 international caps, Matthäus remained tight-lipped.

However, he expects two FC Bayern top performers to remain in the DFB team for some time. “Jamal Musiala is actually ahead of me relative to his age,” the former world footballer made a comparison between himself and the 20-year-old.

In addition, one should “not forget” Joshua Kimmich. The 28-year-old has made 80 international appearances so far, and the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann is also relying on the all-rounder’s services.
