FC Bayern’s decision to no longer rely on the services of club icon Thomas Müller after the end of the season continues to make high waves. According to record international Lothar Matthäus, the whole matter could have been clarified much earlier – at the player’s instinct.
The long -time captain of FC Bayern Lothar Matthäus believes that Thomas Müller could have taken a step towards the Munich executive floor weeks ago in order to quickly clear the dispute over a new contract.
“I would have had a normal conversation with FC Bayern on Thomas Müller’s side. With everyone involved: the CEO (Jan-Christian Dreesen, editor’s note), Uli Hoeneß, Max Eberl,” said the 64-year-old on Sunday evening at “Sky”.
Just before the official confirmation that Müller himself published on Saturday morning, FC Bayern’s decision had become public against an extension. This could have been taken as an opportunity to sit down, said Matthew. Also so as not to give the media the opportunity to “report on this topic every week”.
The noise of the miller has had far-reaching effects, the TV expert was convinced. So the “concentration on the games” may have suffered.

At a very early meeting after the winter break, it could also have been avoided that sports director Eberl could be carried out in January to say that Müller could decide on his future. The same applies to the advice of supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß at the end of February that the 35-year-old should rather end his career. After a meeting suggested by Matthäus, Müller would have “known exactly where he was standing”.
While Matthäus criticized Bayern bosses for the failed communication in the Müller case, he still agrees with the decision-makers. Thomas Müller’s “claim” could not be as a reservist in the squad.
“Thomas Müller is one of the greatest icons of FC Bayern and German football. But for me his time, purely sporty and because of what I have followed in the past six or seven months, was over at this high level. But: I don’t want it to stop. I would like to continue to see him on the pitch,” he argued.
