When FC Bayern exited the Champions League, the focus was on the referee. Vincent Kompany’s decisions elicit a smug reaction
After the semi-final second leg between FC Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain, the focus was not only on sporting issues, but also on some of the decisions made by referee João Pinheiro. The Munich team found clear words after the final whistle.
PSG professional Nuno Mendes was initially at the center of the excitement. He blocked a Bayern pass with his arm and, according to the angry FCB players, should have received his second yellow of the evening. The Portuguese referee claimed to have recognized a handball by Konrad Laimer beforehand. “I touch the ball with my body,” the Austrian countered on the DAZN microphone with his perception from the game. “The referee blew his whistle five seconds later for my handball, which I found strange during the game.”

Pinheiro reportedly followed a tip from the fourth official. When Laimer was confronted with this information, he responded with a smug assessment: “It feels like the fourth official has never said anything in a game.” Vincent Kompany also showed a portion of gallows humor. Confronted with the repetition of the scene, the Belgian laughed. “But then we want to do an analysis as to why we aren’t in the final? You just showed two pictures.”
Harry Kane also clearly looked at the situation. “There clearly should have been a second yellow card,” said the Englishman in the catacombs of the Allianz Arena. “Somehow he changed his mind, maybe the atmosphere at that moment got him a little carried away, but that’s the way it is.”
The second big upset came just a few moments after the Mendes handball. Vitinha hit his teammate João Neves with a freeing shot on his outstretched arm – in his own penalty area. Bayern demanded a hand penalty, but the rules actually do not provide for a penalty in such cases. According to the International Football Association Board (Ifab): If a player is hit in the hand or arm by the ball when a teammate shoots or heads the ball, it is not a punishable handball offense.
