FC Bayern is missing the defensive star for longer than expected

Thomas Tuchel has repeatedly struggled with injury concerns at FC Bayern this season. In the case of immune starvation, the healing process takes longer than initially expected.

It is the next “bad news” that head coach Thomas Tuchel announced on Tuesday evening at FC Bayern’s press conference before the Champions League game at Lazio Rome (from 9:00 p.m. in the live ticker sport.de) had to announce: Left-back Alphonso Davies did not make it into the squad in time for the first leg of the round of 16 in the premier class. Tuchel could not and did not want to provide any information about further downtime.

After a low performance at the beginning of the year, the 23-year-old had regained the status of the undisputed regular player on the left side of the defense. He recently rewarded himself with his first goal of the season against FC Augsburg (3:2).

However, a week later, in the 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he suffered a sprained knee ligament in the final stages. Davies missed the top game against Bayer Leverkusen (0:3).

Return only to FC Bayern’s top game against Leipzig?

Tuchel explained: “We originally thought that it would be enough for Rome and he wasn’t in the squad.” Recovery will take “a little longer” than originally expected. The 50-year-old wanted to be “careful”.

The away game in the Bundesliga on Sunday (5:30 p.m.) at VfL Bochum may come too early for the Canadian. “Bild” had estimated that the total downtime could be two to three weeks. Alphonso Davies may not return until a week later, when the top game against reigning cup winners RB Leipzig takes place (February 24th, 6:30 p.m.).

The recovery of winger Kingsley Coman, who is “still wearing a splint” due to his torn medial ligament, will take even longer. Serge Gnabry is only slowly returning to training after recovering from a muscle injury, while Konrad Laimer (calf injury) “will hopefully go a little quicker than expected”.
