Discussion about Bayern’s sports director

Uli Hoeneß praised the work of sports director Max Eberl at FC Bayern, but did not make any decisions about the future. The honorary president spoke of a “60 to 40” tendency for an extension, but also added in the “Spiegel” top-level discussion: “There are still doubts.” Eberl’s contract runs until 2027. From summer onwards, the question of the 52-year-old’s future with the record champions will become even more exciting.
Eberl himself recently made positive comments about a possible extension of the collaboration. “It wasn’t easy at the beginning. But now we’ve got very, very good things going,” the sports director emphasized. “People should evaluate my job. And if they like my job, then I’m willing to stay at Bayern longer.”
According to Hoeneß, Eberl is “a manager who has played a large part in our success this season.” The supervisory board member said that a possible extension could only be negotiated from July 1st at the earliest, “because board members can only negotiate or extend it a year in advance.” In addition to Eberl, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and, since the beginning of the year, Rouven Kasper have led FC Bayern as Director of Marketing and Sales.
Hoeneß emphasized that he did not want to delve deeper into the question of Eberl’s future. “I don’t want to go into details now, I’ll leave that to our discussion in the supervisory board,” said the 74-year-old. At the supervisory board meeting in August it must then be decided “whether Max Eberl is the manager who should lead FC Bayern into the future.” Eberl has been working in Munich since March 2024, and since then he has kept the squad value largely stable at between 850 million and 1 billion euros. Like Eberl’s contract, CEO Dreesen’s also expires next year. All signs point to an extension here.
