Bayern star awards for the first time
She, of all people, suddenly lost her nerves

Bayern suffered a late setback in the Champions League. For Giulia Gwinn, there was even more to it.
It was just over a year and a half ago when Giulia Gwinn underlined her nerve from the spot: “I don’t think I’ve missed a penalty in my career – at least in competitive games,” said the German national captain in February 2024 after a game against France. In the meantime, this statistic has suffered a scratch – and of all things in the duel against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.
On Wednesday evening, FC Bayern, for whom Gwinn has been playing since 2019, was temporarily behind 1-0 against the Spaniards. After the restart, Atlético’s Silvia Lloris blocked a cross from Bayern’s Klara Bühl in the penalty area with her arm (52nd minute). The video assistant intervened, the result: hand penalty. Gwinn took responsibility and went to the point. The 26-year-old ran, but chased the ball well over the opponent’s goal.
Gwinn wasn’t wrong with her statement back then: According to “Footystats”, the full-back has converted 14 of 14 penalties since the start of her career, one of them at the Olympic Games in the fight for the bronze medal against Spain (1-0), which she ultimately won with her goal. The series should now end against Atlético.
Gwinn and her team were able to turn the game around after a brace from striker Pernille Harder (63rd and 78th), but Atlético managed to equalize to 2-2 shortly before the end with a dream goal. Bayern, who clearly dominated the game after falling behind, lost important points in the premier class after winning eleven competitive games in a row across all competitions.
Bayern’s Klara Bühl said after the game on Disney+: “We are very sad because we came back into the game very well.” The draw is difficult to accept. Double goal scorer Pernille Harder was also frustrated afterwards: “It’s very, very annoying.”
On the last matchday of the Champions League group phase, FC Bayern, who are currently in sixth place, will face Vålerenga Oslo. Participation in the playoffs is already certain. Only the best four teams advance to the quarter-finals; the eight following clubs have to play for the remaining four tickets.
