Bayern coach Vincent Kompany rotated vigorously against Leverkusen. Nevertheless, he saw a dominant performance from his team.
FC Bayern Munich continues its winning streak and also clearly won the top game in the Bundesliga against Bayer Leverkusen. In front of the home crowd it was 3-0 in the end.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany hadn’t even sent his first team onto the pitch before the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain next Tuesday. The Belgian changed the starting lineup in seven positions compared to the cup win against 1. FC Köln, leaving Luís Diaz, Harry Kane and Michael Olise, among others, on the bench. Nevertheless, the German record champions presented themselves dominant from the start. Serge Gnabry (25th minute), Nicolas Jackson (31st) and an own goal from Loïc Badé (43rd) decided the game in the first half, so that Bayern were able to concentrate on managing in the second half despite the substitution of their strike trio.
Thanks to the victory, the Munich team remains confidently at the top of the table with a five point lead over RB Leipzig. Leverkusen is in fifth place with 17 points.
With their usual dominant game, Bayern’s only deficiency at the start of the game was their ability to score – also because Leverkusen defended closely and with concentration in a 5-4-1 system. When things got dangerous in the very right-wing Bayern game, young star Lennart Karl was involved.
The teenager fired the first shots with his strong left foot (8th, 15th) and set up Leon Goretzka’s header chance (18th). A long, world-class ball from Tom Bischof, who, like last time in Gladbach, gave the left-back the lead. Jarell Quansah was left behind in the running duel with Gnabry. The Munich offensive man remained cold-blooded in front of the goal and pushed in.
When Munich scored their second goal, Bayer looked very sleepy. Konrad Laimer was able to calmly cross from the right and Jackson headed in unchallenged from five meters. And the Werkself also helped with the third goal when Badé misdirected a sharp cross from Raphaël Guerreiro into his own net.
Leverkusen had certainly identified opportunities in the Munich game to become dangerous themselves. Bishop’s side was constantly looking for the long ball, and quick switching was supposed to provide depth. But all of this got stuck in the beginning. Because free-kick specialist Alejandro Grimaldo (muscular problems) was on the bench, a weapon was missing.
After further chances from Jackson (50th) and Guerreiro (58th), Kompany brought in his regular players Kane, Olise and Diaz – they should also get in the mood for PSG. However, their actions sometimes lacked sharpness. On the other hand, Joker Christian Kofane (81′) missed a rare opportunity for the Werkself to make the result more bearable.
