For Marc-André Ter Stegen, a new era begins at FC Barcelona. After around ten years as a regular goalkeeper and with number 1 on his back, he gets rid of his place between the posts. As the Catalan newspapers “Mundo Deportivo” and “Sport” unanimously report, Captain Ter Stegen was announced on Friday the decision by coach Hansi Flick. In the ranking, the DFB goalkeeper not only slips behind new signing Joan García (24), but also Wojciech Szczesny (35). Nevertheless, he wants to stay, it is said.
There have been rumors for a possible farewell to the 44-time national keeper for a long time, which is still under contract with Barça until 2028. Ter Stegen is apparently supposed to be down from the list of salarys, since it is too expensive for the bank or grandstand-especially with regard to Barcelona’s problems with the Laliga salary limit in recent years. Finally, he was associated with the AS Monaco, which is said to have explored the possibility of an obligation. The Chelsea FC, Manchester United and Galatasaray were also traded as possible new employers for ter Stegen. But this, it is said, wants to face the competition at his club. In addition, he did not want to leave Barcelona for private reasons. There is talk of Barça Ter Stegen for a change for a change.
Ter Stegen had risen to Como to Como in 1907 last summer after the departure of Sergi Roberto (33), but had suffered a patella tear on matchday 6 and missed almost the entire season. In the meantime, Iñaki Peña (26) had stepped in as a replacement, then Szczesny returned from his retirement and did his job so well that he was rewarded by an extension by two years on Monday. With García’s commitment for 25 million euros from city rival Espanyol, there are currently four keepers in Barças squad. García, who is already part of the Spanish national team, belongs to the future in the goal of the Blaugrana. “I have great respect for Marc, but with Joan we had to make a decision for the present and the future,” sports director Deco had last said and left the decision as to who is playing. This has now fallen.
Ter Stegen switched from his training club Borussia Mönchengladbach to Barça in 2014 for EUR 12 million, for which he ran 422 times and stayed 175 times without conceding. In 2019 he reached his personally highest market value of 90 million euros, currently he is in second place at 12 million euros and thus in German ranking. It is currently still unclear how the situation in Barcelona will affect his role in the DFB goal. National coach Julian Nagelsmann is actually planning with Ter Stegen as number 1 for the 2026 World Cup.
