FC Augsburg again had to do without regular keeper Rafal Gikiewicz in the explosive home game against Borussia Dortmund. It is therefore clear that the contract of the Pole in Augsburg, which expires in the summer, cannot be automatically extended. Due to his shoulder problems, the 35-year-old continues to only train individually, as FCA coach Enrico Maaßen reported on Friday. As in the previous five games, the goalkeeper will be represented by Tomas Koubek in the duel with BVB on Sunday (5:30 p.m.).
Gikiewicz’s failure on the penultimate day robs the last chance of an automatic extension in Augsburg. According to reports, the impulsive goalkeeper would have had to play 25 Bundesliga games this Bundesliga season for the cooperation to continue almost by itself – he reached 23 on April 8 and has been out since then. His future at FCA is open.
According to media reports, the keeper himself insists on another two-year contract in the Fuggerstadt. However, the association should only think about working together for another year. “We are in daily contact,” said Maassen, who spoke explicitly of the number one at FCA on the subject of Gikiewicz in April. “We saw how important he is to us. But now he is injured. And there’s no point in talking about it any further,” Maassen said at the time. “Rafa has to get well. And when he’s really healthy and fit again, he’ll be back in goal.”
