Un a giant screen in front of an illuminated Gothic cathedral, a message from Pope Leo XIV that resonates in the square, melodic synths that intertwine with the voice of the Pontiff and then the beat that explodes. This is the scene – almost surreal – that transformed Father Guilherme Peixoto51-year-old Portuguese priest, in Most viral DJ of the moment. His DJ set, created on the occasion of a large youth festival in Košicein Slovakia, he passed 10 million views. Many users commented convinced that it was a video generated with artificial intelligence. But no: it was all true.
When the Pope becomes the opening act of a DJ set
The idea of using the Pope’s message as an intro was born the evening before the event, in front of St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral. Pope Leo XIV had sent a video of greetings for the birthday of the Archbishop of Košice. Here’s the flash of genius «We have the opening for tomorrow», Peixoto said in the interview with Washington Post. The next day, the result is a perfect scenography: theatrical fog, lights, crowd and the Pontiff’s Amen which becomes part of the musical crescendo before the entrance of the priest DJ.
Music as a bridge for young people
For Peixoto, the DJ set is not entertainment as an end in itself: it is a new way of evangelizing. He simply defines it as «the project»: bring messages of faith and build authentic connections through a language that young people understand, such as electronic music.
«In an era of digital solitude», he says in the interview, «dancing together can become a form of community, a way to remember that God’s love can reach everywhere, even in squares transformed into dancefloors». In his DJ sets, samples of the «Ave Maria», traditional hymns and even the soundtrack of Super Mario Bros. His style? An unprecedented blend of irony, spirituality and rhythm.
From the altar to the console: the story of Father Guilherme Peixoto
Peixoto’s life hasn’t always been about consoles and illuminated cathedrals. In the 2001when he is ordained a priest and sent to a parish with serious economic difficulties, he has a bold idea: open a summer bar to raise funds. First come the evenings with the choirs, then the karaoke. But he quickly realizes that people want to dance. So he starts creating increasingly rich playlists from his laptop. Result: in three years, the parish pays off all debts.
Father Guilherme and the DJ school
Self-taught and perfectionist, at 40 he decided to enroll in a DJ school in Porto. He finds himself surrounded by kids who learn mixing techniques in a flash, while he struggles. “I was furious,” he jokes, “how could they be faster than me?” He doesn’t give up. It is practiced everywhere: between a funeral and a mass, between a confession and a lesson. And it was there that the idea of definitively merging his two worlds matured.
The Church and music: a tradition older than it seems
The Peixoto case may surprise, but the history of the Church tells a different story. The Catholic tradition has always intertwined sacred and popular music: from the liturgical revolution of Vatican IIwho brought guitars to masses, to community songs that transformed devotion into participation. Today, scholars remind us, no music is truly “profane”: every sound can become a bridge towards the transcendent. Even an electronic beat in front of a gothic cathedral.
